PACC Presentation Dinner

The Port Adelaide Cricket Club held a presentation Dinner on Friday April the 3rd with over 130 people attending the event at the clubrooms. Players, partners, members and supporters enjoyed the evening with the highlight being the slideshow of photos from the season and the videos of the 20/20 Grand Finals in womens and mens.

Past Players Club

The Port Adelaide Cricket Club is forming a Past Players Club to form a link between past players
and the current players of the cricket club.

The Past Players Club will be made up of past players who wish to sponsor a current player for a season. An exciting new initiative at the club is to provide all members of the Past Players Club a PACC Baggy Black Cap with their playing number on it. All current A Grade players will have a Baggy Cap this season with their playing number. The PACC would like to hold a Past Players Function to launch this Club and to provide a link back to the club in any capacity for a past player through membership in the Past Players Club.

Past Players Club Membership

  • Baggy Black Cap
  • Invitation to all Club Functions
  • Invitation to Sponsors & Volunteers Day
  • Non Playing Membership to PACC
  • Sponsored player photo in the clubrooms

Past Player Club Membership & Player Sponsorship costs $150 for the season with all proceeds going to the Cricket Club & not the individual player.

The PACC Management Committee thanks you for your support of the Past Players Club.

Magpies' Sawade selected as Rising Star for Round 2

Port Adelaide recruit Ryan Sawade has been selected as the first Grade Cricket Rising Star nominee for 2008/09.

With Port Adelaide scoring 263 from their 50 overs, Sawade, a right hand medium fast bowler
ensured a Magpies victory by taking 4/42 from 10 overs. Tea Tree Gully was eventually all out
for 224 in the Round 2 match at Port Adelaide Reserve. Sawade followed up this impressive
performance by taking a further 3/34 against Northern Districts in the opening round of the
XXXX Gold One Day Cup the following day. The enthusiastic twenty year old began his Grade
Cricket career with Adelaide in their junior grades before debuting in the Buffalos’ A grade a few
seasons ago. This year, Sawade moved to Port Adelaide to take up the challenge of leading the
Magpies attack.

Port's Sam Harvey named as Rising Star for Round 8

Four late wickets to Port Adelaide’s Sam Harvey halted East Torrens’ momentum and secured
him with a nomination for the Grade Cricket Rising Star award for Round 8.

On Saturday at Port Adelaide Reserve, the Magpies compiled a competitive 257 and had the
Red’s two down for just 27 runs. However, the game seemed to be back in the Red’s hands
early on day 2 after a couple of solid partnerships. East Torrens was seemingly cruising at
4/125, until Sam Harvey was given the ball. Harvey’s return of 4/14 from 9.5 overs, restricted
the last 5 batters to just 8 runs between them, thus ensuring the points going to Port Adelaide.

The right arm off spinner has worked his way through the junior ranks at Port Adelaide, beginning
in 2003/04 in the Ray Sutton squad and debuting in a single A Grade appearance last season. This
season, a sprinkling of B Grade wickets and experience in the XXXX Gold One Day and Twenty20
matches has seen Harvey almost cement his spot at the top.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PORT ADELAIDE

ON WINNING THE A GRADE XXXX GOLD Twenty20 CUP FINAL @ ADELAIDE OVAL...
PORT ADELAIDE Defeated WOODVILLE, Tuesday January 6 2009

ADELAIDE OVAL GLORY FOR PORT

The men's A Grade won their first piece of silverware this decade in fine style, with a thrilling last-ball finish in the Twenty20 final at the Adelaide Oval. Matthew Weeks' unbeaten 71 from 58 balls helped set Woodville 156 for victory. Woodville's reply got off to a rollicking start, with Aaron Sayers (63) and Ken Skewes (19) flaying the bowling and taking most of the momentum early on.

Port's bowlers, however, managed to restrict the batsmen late on to leave a thrilling finish, watched by Allan Border and Damien Fleming, and a crowd of around 2,000 at the death. The Australian pair also witnessed Jason Roy's spectacular catch at mid-off at a key stage off Weeks' bowling.

The final over was bowled by Ryan Sawade who held his nerve well. Needing 6 off the last ball, the batsman could only push to midwicket sparking an evening of huge celebrations for the Port side who were the curtain raiser for South Australia and New South Wales. Weeks, who had taken 1 for 30, had further cause to celebrate when he was recalled to the state side as his stellar run of club success continued.

The game was a brilliant example of team-work after Weeks chose to bat. Roy pitched in with 20 and Scott Dalgleish with 16. Shane Chatto then flicked a handy cameo of 18 not out, joining Weeks in an unbeaten stand of 31, the pair running well together and making the most of their opportunities, including stealing overthrow runs which would later prove crucial.

Then came a superb display of fielding, Dalgleish setting the standard as he broke the Sayers-Skewes partnership with a cool-headed run-out. Chatto's run-out of Woodville captain Luke Wells then triggered a mini-collapse of 3 for 2. Port also held all of their catches, including Roy's cracker.

It is now up the women to try to make it a club double when they face Northern Districts at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday 1st February. The match kicks off at 10.50am and all support would be welcome.

C Grade edged out in Twenty20 final

A giant 4 for 136 was just not enough to help the women's C Grade lift the Twenty20 trophy in December, with Prospect managing 4 for 147. Port captain Anne Deaton was nevertheless delighted with her side's effort in what is a building year for the team.

"Although winning a grand final is always a highlight and I can't say I wasn't disappointed by our bowling and fielding efforts on the day, the fact that we made the grand final was extremely pleasing and surprising," Anne said. "Just winning a game was an achievement as we had lost the majority of our experienced players at the end of last season. We batted well and posted an impressive score, Prospect were just too good and deserved the win."

Anne topscored with 43 while Sarah Thamm saved her highest score of the season for the showcase final, easing to 33. Joy Brown and Rachel Thamm then added an unbeaten stand of 22 to lift Port to an impressive 4 for 136 after the early loss of openers Karen Leist and Sonya Mangelsen, who had made five unbeaten fifties in the group stage.

Some wayward bowling, however, enabled Prospect – who were undefeated throughout the tournament - to take the honours. But Port, last year's one-day champions, took great heart from reaching the final, having won five matches in their group round.

Port open their 40-over campaign on January 25, with a visit to Sturt. They play at Unley Oval in the first of seven group matches.

All round success for women
December 1, 2008
By Lisa Burns

All three women's teams came out on top in their Twenty20 openers at the weekend. In a double-header at Eric Sutton, the Cs beat Tea Tree Gully by 19 runs before A grade openers Karen Rolton and Rebecca Pollard put on a crowd-pleasing knock to defeat Kensington's easy benchmark of 93 runs, in just 13 overs. At East Torrens, Rommie Corso gained three wickets and Natalie Owens made 50 to help their team secure a win.

Sonia Mangelsen was in fine touch for the Cs and made 50 not out, before retiring. Bowler Fiona Hand's quick wicket (1/4) offered a glimmer of hope for Tea Tree Gully but it was not enough to give the team momentum: only two more wickets were collected from Port's respectable runs total of
121. 13-year-old Kayla Staszuk also contributed 30, her top score in all cricket.

Tight bowling from Port restricted the chase: Fiona Barr took 2 for 16 and Mangelsen 2 for 17. M Mordaunt made a handy 50, but Port mounted the pressure until the very end forcing Tea Tree Gully to finish with 6 for 102.

In the A Grade, new side Kensington elected to bat and found it difficult to make runs off Port's tight bowling and sharp fielding, with January Jackowiak running out opener Amy Walker in the first over.

Despite the team displaying some good overall form in C Wallace making 49 not out, Kensington's runs came slowly and Port maintained a tight grip on the side's momentum.

At the end of the 20 overs Port collected 3 wickets and Kensington ended with 3 for 92, (Rebecca Pollard 1/15, Ashleigh Homes 1/17).

But it was all over in just 12.3 overs: Port openers Pollard and Karen Rolton displayed strong form and didn't show any mercy to the new A Grade side, hammering boundaries and knocking a series of crowd-pleasing sixes.

Rolton was at one point close to being stumped after lingering from outside her crease, but regained composure and celebrated a half-century, finishing on 55 not out; Pollard finished 26 not out.

The next round of the women's Twenty20 competition is on December 7; the A grade are playing away versus Northern Districts, the B Grade are also playing away versus Tea Tree Gully, and the C Grade will host a home game against Southern District at Eric Sutton.

Port captures Ben Walters for officer

SACA has given all grade clubs an officer in a bid to improve development and foster tomorrow's stars. Port Adelaide have captured Ben Walters, who has played for Victoria Country and will add batting depth to the A Grade on top of his club duties.

His unbeaten 169 against South Australia, for example, earned him a call-up to Australian Country side against Queensland, which was ultimately washed out. He has also been a club coach for three years, as well as the development officer for the Mallee Murray region for that time. He has also played and coached in England.

Ben's role as officer will be to organise and manage everything to do with game development for
Port and also in the surrounding area in schools cricket and in2Cricket programs. Administration
for the club is part of the remit, so he will be assisting the committee and club members in taking
the club forward both on and off the field.

Brenton Evans announced the appointment at the pre-season launch on Sunday, 28 September and said he was delighted as Port had "gone after the very best" - and succeeded.

Ben explained: "I really want to become the best player I can be and I knew a move to a city was
required to do this. I made the decision to move to SA instead of Melbourne based on living and a
much better way of life over here and I believe there are also better opportunities in cricket for
me over here. I have been made very welcome by everyone at Port and this has made the
transition into a new club much easier. I thank Paul Finnie for his help as well as the playing
group and committee. I look forward to a good season with Port Adelaide on and off the field and
also having a positive impact on game development within the Port Adelaide metro and country
zones and helping to grow and build the club into the future. I wish everyone involved with the
PACC and enjoyable season and all the best."

The new initiative means that Ben Johnswood will step down from his association with Port. This Ben has taken up an officer post with Kensington and we thank Ben for all his work over the last four years and wish him well.

Keeping on the right side of Dr Evil

Wayne Frederick reports on the juniors' pre-season trip to the Eyre Peninsula

After all the preparations had been finally been done - and the stress levels at maximum - the trip was on. Everybody was told to be at the club no later than 6.00am on the Saturday as we had to be at Wallaroo to meet the ferry by 8.30.

This was achieved and we headed off on our trip, everybody was in a good mood except one person, the coach, hoping that it all goes to plan. As we were heading down the highway the lads thought it would be a holiday for four days. We made the ferry on time thanks to our volunteer bus driver Peter, later to be known as Dr Evil.

After this the trip surprisingly went like clockwork. Arriving at our destination (Ungarra Sports Club) 30minutes before the AFL Grand Final, we unpacked and watched the footy.

Straight after it finished we put the lads to work for a solid hour and a half. At this point the lads finally realised it was not a holiday.

Sunday we were up early, 6am, for a walk while the adults cooked breakfast. At 9am we arrived at Tumby Bay Oval for an early net session before the first of our Coaching clinics started.

We had about 35 lads from the surrounding areas turn up ranging in age from 11 – 15 years of age. While the locals were treated to some coaching drills, the Port boys were sent off to do their benchmark test and prepare for a twenty/20 game against some of the local talent, a good game going down to the wire. We lost on the last ball and did we cop it from some of the locals. Our lads were disappointed.

My intentions on Monday morning had started out to be a light run before the main game at noon but a couple of boys still thought it was a holiday. The training session turned out to be over an hour long. We won the main game and gave it back to the locals.

I gave the lads a lazy morning on Tuesday as I Knew Dr Evil had some interesting exercises for the boys. Starting out at Tumby Bay Oval they had to carry various items as a team to the jetty about a 10-minute walk for the average person not carrying anything, but the lads stuck to their task carrying their items and getting some very funny looks from the locals. After successfully completing that exercise Dr Evil put the lads through a rigorous training regime of around an hour. We then headed home making it back at the PACC on time.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few people. To Reece and Catherine, a very special thank you for your efforts at your end. If it was not for your help the camp would not have been as successful as it was. To all the parents who brought their lads from many miles away to have a bat and bowl with us I appreciate enormously and to Paul Tregloan Steve Hoffman, Mark Simpson and finally Peter (Dr Evil) I thank you for all your efforts on this camp - if it was not for you, this camp I believe would not have been a success.
And finally to the lads - congratulations to you all for the effort you put in to the camp and hopefully this will be the start of a successful year.

SACA has announced several changes to playing conditions this summer, including to the heat
policy. The following release came from SACA – please read it (well, wade through it) as it is
likely to affect your matches this summer in one way or another:

The following is a summary of the more significant changes to playing conditions. It is not
exhaustive and is only a guide for participants. For a full explanation of playing conditions,
participants must refer to the Grade Cricket Bylaws 2008-2009.

..........................................................................................................................................

General Playing Conditions

A new ball is only required to be taken in the first innings of each team. A new or used
ball (in good condition), as approved by the umpires may be used in the second innings.

A second new ball may be taken in A Grade at the completion of 75 overs. A second new ball
is not permitted to be taken in the first innings of any other grade.

Changes to the Heat Policy provide SACA with flexibility to alter the start time or
number of overs in all matches in any grade.

In Men’s A, B, C and D Grades, batting and bowling performance points are only awarded
in the first innings. (Women’s A, B and C grades, Boys Under 16 and Under 14 grades
remain the same as last season with performance points being awarded in both the first
and second innings).

Women’s C Grade - A player may retire at any stage of her innings or must immediately
retire upon reaching 50. The batter shall be recorded as retired, not out, and may
resume their innings at the fall of the 2nd-last wicket (ie at the fall of the ninth wicket).

Under 14 Red and White and Ray Sutton Shield - a player may retire at any stage of his
innings. The batter shall be recorded as retired, not out, and may resume his innings
at the fall of the 2nd last wicket (ie at the fall of the ninth wicket).

..........................................................................................................................................

Two Day Cricket Matches
Applies to Men’s A, B, C and D Grades and Boys Under 16 Red
and White and Under 14 Red and White
Grades.

Playing times and number of overs

A Grade - 11.40am to 6.00pm, 90 overs
B, C & D Grade - 1.00pm to 6.00pm, 80 overs
Under 16 - 1.30pm to 6.00pm, 70 overs
Under 14 - 1.30pm to 5.30pm, 60 overs

In all grades in the first innings, the team batting first shall (unless bowled out), bat until
they have received the objective number of overs at which time play will cease for the day.

For example: In an A Grade match, if the team batting first is not dismissed, their innings
will conclude at the end of the 90th over ? even if this is achieved prior to 6.00pm (ie if the
team batting first is 8/250 at the end of the 90th
over and the time is 5.55pm, stumps will
be immediately called
). Naturally, if the 90th over is not bowled by 6.00pm, play will
continue until such time that the 90th over is completed (and penalties may apply).

If the team batting first is dismissed, the team batting second will bat to the scheduled
completion of play (for example: in an A Grade match if the team batting first is dismissed
prior to 5.50pm, the team batting second will only be required to bat until 6.00pm regardless
of the number of overs bowled during the day).

Once a first innings result has been achieved in Men's A, B, C and D Grades and Boys Under
16 Red and White and Under 14 Red and White Grades, the match will continue to the scheduled
conclusion (ie stumps on day 2) unless both captains agree that no further result can be achieved
and play may be terminated. This however, can not occur any earlier than the tea interval or
2 hours prior to stumps (whichever occurs first).

Penalties for slow over rates in A, B, C and D Grades have been changed. A penalty of  6 runs
will be applied for each over not completed in the appropriate time and will be added to the
opposition teams score. (Under 16 and Under 14 Grades will continue to have a .25 performance
point penalty applied).

..........................................................................................................................................

The match terminates upon a result being achieved except in Women’s A Grade whereby the
match shall continue (in a second innings) until at least 5.00pm when both captains can agree
to call off play.

by the Grade Cricket Coordinator will apply to other grades.

Fielding restrictions

Bowling procedure

Overs are bowled in 5 over blocks (ie overs 1 to 5 are bowled from one end and then
overs 6 to 10 are bowled from the other end etc). At the end of each over, only the two
batters and two umpires change ends.

Apart from normal field position changes, the fielders only change after each 5 over block,
the umpires and batters remaining at the same end.

Free hit after a foot fault no-ball. The ball following a foot fault no ball will be a free hit to the
batter facing it. Changes to fielding positions are only permitted if a different batter is on strike
for the free hit delivery.

In the Men’s XXXX Gold Twenty20 Cup competition, a team consists of 11 players.

In the Under 19, Under 16 and Under 14 exhibition matches, a team consists of eleven or
twelve players (only eleven fielders may field at one time and only eleven batters are
allowed to bat).

In women’s A, B and C Grade, a team consists of 9 players (a team is all out at the fall of
the eighth wicket).

Port juniors make state squads

Our juniors continue to thrive with a host of girls and boys making state squads and playing other representative cricket.

Ashleigh Homes has recently been selected for the state U-17s. Well done Ash!

Hayley Smith made the long-list for the junior state squads. It has recently been confirmed that Hayley has made the cut for the state U-15s. Good work Hayley!

Kayla Staszuk represented the South Australia Primary Schools Sports Association (more easily
known as SAPSASA!) in the off-season. She headed up to Darwin to represent the state in June.
Well done, Kayla.

We also congratulate Demi Martin who has come up from Scorpion Shield to the C grade. Demi,
a Grade 6 student, will help bolster the bowling.

For the boys, James Hoffman represented SA in the National SAPSASA carnival, as did three boys
from our country zone (Jay Green, Izaak Boylan, Sidney Masters). Jacob Fisher is in the SACA Under-14 Development Squad.

Joshua Hoffman, James Lakin and Josh Thredgold (the last two from Eyre Peninsula) are in
the SACA Under-15 squad, while Joshua Boylan is in the SACA Under-17 squad. Well done, all.

Karen Rolton and Emma Sampson have retained their slots in the senior state squads –
unsurprisingly enough – and we will be right behind South Australia as they aim for the title.
Last year’s final against champions New South Wales was rained out, so they missed their
chance to take the honours.

Port Adelaide welcomes new cricket players

Pre-season training is going exceptionally well, Paul Finnie writes. We have had in excess of
60 different players out so far this pre-season (not including a couple of guys overseas) so
competition for spots will be hot - players need to liaise with coaching staff (ie me) and get
out to training ASAP to give themselves the best chance for selection.

The quality of trainings has been excellent and I would like to welcome our new players on
behalf of the club, including two overseas players:

Josh Litchfield, Alex Armour, James Barns, Michael Curyer, Adam Klimkiewicz, Nick Hart,
Paul Tam, Ryan Sawade, Matt Morris, Casey Grocke, Cohen Thamm, Tyrone Talbot,
Phil Williams, Sean Flintoff, Scott Dalgleish (Scotland), Ben Wallis (England).

Scott is a good batsman who arrives with the chance to improve his career and broaden his
experience. Ben, who has just finished school in Yorkshire, is a keeper. We welcome them both
to the club.

The women’s section also welcomes spinner Crystal Wilson, who has joined us from
Tea Tree Gully, and Kate Rush, a medium-pace bowler who used to play for Flinders. Kate
recently moved to Alberton and decided it was “about time” she revived her cricket career.

We are always looking for new players, from beginner to experienced, so please spread the
word and keep an eye out.

..........................................................................................................................................

Honours for Port Adelaide

Just in case you missed it – at the end of last season Port Adelaide representatives won two
prizes at the annual Bradman Medal awards at the Adelaide Oval. Brenton Evans was named SACA
Volunteer of the Year, while C Grade’s Sonia Mangelson won the Carolyn Dittmar Medal for her
playing contributions. We thank Brenton for his continuing efforts and congratulate both on a
great achievement.

Brenton will be going to the Allan Border Medal in Melbourne next year.

..........................................................................................................................................

Individual and small-group cricket coaching available

It’s not too late to get yourself ready for the new season - or even hone your skills once
it’s begun. Paul Finnie is offering fitness and skills coaching to individuals or small groups.

Paul is a Level 1 and current PACC senior club coach and B-Grade captain.
He has also played A Grade.

All players are eligible and Paul will include an assessment of fitness/skill levels, written
feedback, and sessions designed to each player’s individual needs/strengths/weaknesses -
“Hopefully in an enjoyable way” he says, ominously.

It’s your chance to rectify any technical faults. Demand for sessions last season was high
and good results were obtained in terms of individual improvement.

Where: Usually PACC, Baynes Place, Port Adelaide, but varying by arrangement depending

Port Lincoln Visit

The Port Adelaide Cricket Club is hailing the recent 3 day visit to Port Lincoln a great success with
over 500 people attending the exhibition match between the SACA 20/20 champions and a Lower Eyre Peninsula invitational XI held at Ravendale Sporting ground on Thursday the 22nd of January under lights.

Port Lincoln MatchThe Exhibition match was an entertaining affair
with Port Adelaide batting first and recording a
big score of 194 with Adam Dilley the star scoring
a brisk 68. Although a big score was on the board,
the Port boys were undermanned in the bowling
department and with some big hitters in the
country line up a good run chase was assured.
Steve Orchard provided some fireworks early
in the innings and the Port players were also
impressed with his keeping skills up to the stumps.

Eventually the LEP boys were dismissed for 159
with PACC Coach Paul Finnie claiming 4 wickets
with his slow medium pacers. The game was of
a high standard under lights in front of a supportive
Cricket Clinicscrowd with many having travelled a long way from
within the EP to the match.

The Port Adelaide Cricket Club held 2 coaching
clinics during their stay which saw nearly 100
budding young cricketers attend, where they were
put through their paces touching on all the skills of
the game in a fun and interactive way with the Port
Adelaide players. Most of the Port Adelaide players
had not been to Port Lincoln before and were very
keen to take on the country boys in the Twenty20
match and enjoy Port Lincoln during the Tuna Rama
festival.

A highlight for many of the players was the
Tuna Swim'Close up Tuna Tour' where the players enjoyed
feeding and swimming with the fish that has made
the town famous. The Port Adelaide Cricket Club
would like to make this visit to Port Lincoln an
annual event to help promote and develop cricket
in the Lower Eyre Peninsula.

The Port Adelaide Cricket Club would like to take
this opportunity to thank the people of Port Lincoln
and the Lower Eyre Peninsula for making us feel
very welcome during our stay. The Port Lincoln
Cricket Association deserve tremendous credit for
helping to coordinator the event in such a short
time along with all the behind the scenes work
from Bluey Dunn and Peter Forrest.
Port Lincoln Trip
I would like to also say a big thank you to all the
sponsors of cricket in Port Lincoln and to the Grand
Tasman Hotel, Matt Woller of Close Up Tuna Tours
along with the Ravendale Sporting complex, Tasman
CC & The Baseball Club for helping make our visit
to Port Lincoln a memorable one for all of us.
