Port’s Webber nominated as Round 7 Rising Star
Port Adelaide opening batsman Brett Webber has been nominated as the Grade Cricket Rising Star for Round 7.
After winning the first two matches of the season, Port Adelaide (eighth) was desperate to secure full points against Prospect (ninth) in their Round 7 fixture at Port Adelaide Reserve.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, the Magpies lost skipper Daryl Monger early for 19 and the in-form Joel Davies and Matthew Weeks, both without scoring. With the score at 3/45, Port Adelaide was in some trouble.
Whilst wickets fell at the other end, Magpies opening batsman Brett Webber laid the foundation to what proved to be a match winning innings. Webber top scored with 66 runs and importantly contributed to a 95 run partnership with Adam Dilley (51), to resurrect the Port Adelaide innings. The Magpies finished at 6/253 which proved too many runs for Prospect.
Twenty-two year old Webber commenced with the Magpies Under 14 team in 2000/01 and played the first of his ten A Grade matches four years later. Webber seems destined to finally secure his position in Port Adelaide’s line-up with some promising performances so far this season. A century in the B grade in Round 3 was enough for Webber to earn promotion and scores of 49 against West Torrens in Round 6, and his classy 66 last weekend, indicate he is keen to stay.
As a result of this performance, Webber has been selected as the Grade Cricket Rising Star nominee for Round 7.
